Vestibular rehabilitation

Vestibular rehabilitation, also known as vestibular rehabilitation therapy is a specialized form of physical therapy used to treat vestibular disorders or symptoms, characterized by-

  • Dizziness
  • Vertigo
  • Light headedness
  • Unsteadiness/ Balance Issues
  • Nausea

The vestibular system in the brain controls the posture, the ability to maintain balance and movements while walking or running. Vision, auditory system (ears), facial muscles and the processors on the soles of the feet are all important components of the vestibular system.

A few commonly used techniques to treat the condition are-

  • Treatment of cervical spine dysfunction
  • Retraining of normal balance system using specific exercises
  • Positional Maneuvers
  • Education of positions and movements.

The objective of Vestibular Rehabilitation Therapy is to retrain the brain, by recognizing the signals from the vestibular system along with information received from proprioception and vision. In most cases, if patients continue to perform the exercises they have learned, balance and dizziness problems decrease significantly or completely disappear.
